Arcania, the City of the Magi, is an ancient citadel founded for the purpose of knowledge and magical research. It has always been a haven for wizards and sorcerers of all levels of ability and outlook and lies on the southern shores of the Springwater Lake. The climate is pleasant and mild most of the year though there can be significant amounts of snow during the winter months. The lands surrounding Arcania are very fertile and conducive to farming.

Starting from rather humble beginnings, Arcania was at first just a series of unified cottages and meager tower complexes. The great founders of the community were actually refugees seeking a place of solace from the hysterias of the brief period on inquisition in the lands of Glorwenia to the West. Most of the original inhabitants were in fact minor mages and hedge wizards seeking a place to practice their craft in peace. As time went on, the City of the Magi became known as a source of almost any information concerning magic and the Essence as more and more scholars emigrated to the area.

Arcania is now a powerful city-state defended by a token military force and a group of knights from the Order of the Pentagram, a quasi-religious order dedicated to the goddess Maya. The city is well known for its numerous libraries and other depositories of knowledge, some of which are administered through the clergy of Thune. The city has few enemies despite its small military simply because of the high concentration of spellcasters that dwell within its walls or maintain homes nearby. The magi keep a vigilant eye on their rival to the northeast, Nimrodel, the City of Knaves. A number of smaller hamlets and simple villages have also sprung up in the surrounding countryside each administrated by its own local government but owing allegiance to the Council of Magelords.

Rumors: A small but growing faction of elitist mages has recently come to the foreground. Their true goals are yet unknown. A numer of eerie lights and haunting cries have been coming from the Glenhaven Woods to the South. The occurances of these strange phenomena only occur at night and their source is yet to be determined. The Prefect of Nimrodel is said to have a number of sleeper agents within the City of the Magi, some may even be in high ranking positions withint the city government.
