Anubia is a desert kingdom dedicated to the sun god Anu. The king of this land is believed by the populace to be a direct representative of Anu on Hyerune. His word is law and no one dares to disobey his commands. The laws of the land are based on various religious precepts and the kingdom is a bit more open-minded than the surrounding nations.
Anubia was once closely associated with the Nimeirians to the West but the two nations separated due mainly to philosophical differences even though both are highly lawful in nature. The Anubians tolerate all of the non-evil deities but Anu is the only officially recognized religion. The Cults of Maya and Cabel are each widely respected faiths as well. Clerics of Anu generally receive special treatment under the laws of the land and are generally afforded certain benefits not enjoyed by other priesthoods. Many of the high ranking Anubian clerics are powerful landowners and quite wealthy as well.
The Anubians have a strong belief in the afterlife and believe that all good actions will be rewarded at the end of lifes journey. To this end they build awe-inspiring temples, structures and statues dedicated to the divine. The dead of wealthy families are often mummified in ritualized ceremonies and entombed in elaborate crypts. Many of the royal dead are buried in hidden crypt-mazes located throughout the Basalt Hills to the South. Fabulous riches are said to be buried with these mummified remains but the crypts are also said to be well guarded. Two separate holy orders dedicated to the god Cabel are known to dwell in these hills to protect the tombs of the departed. The Guardians of the Crypt are more localized and will often build numerous shelters near the tomb entrances attacking any would be grave robbers. The more insidious Zenispad count a number of Consecrated Harriers (see the Defenders of the Faith, 2001, WOTC)and rangers among their number. Their goals are to hunt down any who dare to profane a tomb under the protection of Cabel and to slay the offender.
Rumors: Several powerful and high-ranking priests of Anu have been secretly plotting against the Priest-King in an attempt to seize power for themselves. These actions can certainly not be sanctioned by the Sun God yet these priests still possess divine spell casting abilities. Could it be that they receive their powers from some other divine source? The exhiled Witch of Anubia known as Neferkari is always a thorn in the side of the Priest-Kings. She has not been heard from in several months but it is doubtful she has given up her quest for vengence. The desert regions west of Pashedu are said to be under the control of a might efreet and his followers. Their goals are yet unknown.
